Why Los Blancos Have 'Complete Faith' in Youngster Pitarch

Thiago Pitarch in action
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for Real Madrid, featuring five starts.

When an 18-year-old makes club a historic moment in a crucial European match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.

During his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions claimed a three-nil last-16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek return to confirm a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder became the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent From The Academy

The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.

He joined Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Reports would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and drive he brought to the team.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Character'

In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and gave him playing time in pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing football, each day you head to training and every day you have a game," said the player following his debut.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."

Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.

Pitarch has taken it with performances that have belied his youth and inexperience.

"He's a extremely fast player, and you can observe his capabilities," said Arbeloa. "He's incredibly dynamic, with great stamina, work-rate and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.

"His standout trait is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I understand fans might be surprised to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to perform what he usually does.

"He will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.

He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the choice to play for either country at the highest level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a official senior international match.

Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are watching his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision so far. My situation is great with Spain, but I will reach a decision soon."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine chose La Roja, Brahim opted to represent Morocco.

Focus on the Future

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for over an hour in the two-one win at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the team pursue trophies to come.

After his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.

"The manager treats me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I have to earn my minutes on the field," he said following the success at Etihad Stadium.
