"Any idea when you're interviewing the Haim sisters?" an inquiry arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

There's just a single issue: The sender also wants to be Haim's fourth member. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple celebrated admirers have publicly coveted the honor.

It's clear a special quality is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy Award contenders.

In the tradition of the best groups, they're a tight-knit trio. Their videos repeatedly depict them striding in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such boundless happiness you can't help but think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the biggest compliment. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage others to make music."

"So everyone gets an invitation to be the fourth Haim sister."

Award Recognition

The group are connecting from home, where they're recovering after an major tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the accolade is deeply felt by the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge milestone," adds Alana. "But we're just grateful for the female artists that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The project emerged from a period of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that unique transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The themes track endings and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real time who they want to be.

"I adore description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to consciously practice ignoring the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Sound

That recent confidence called for a new sound – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The band's openness inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic tales.

A former partner ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Future

One can easily sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their place in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an global fan base.

Yet Haim will consistently be their primary commitment.

"We have been performing since I was little," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
