The Golden State is Entirely Drought-Free for the First Instance in 25 Years.

For the first time in 25 years, not a single part of the state is facing dryness. This milestone arrives after grueling years marked by a lack of precipitation that exacerbated blaze threats and pressured its massive agricultural sector.

A Map Reveals Zero Dryness

Thursday's report from the U.S. Drought Monitor illustrated that California in its entirety is without dry or drought conditions. This development came after weeks of heavy precipitation that helped fill water storage sites like the state's largest lakes well above their long-term norms.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve only known in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” remarked a climate scientist.

Following Powerful Weather to Wet Holidays

Achieving this status included powerful and fatal winter storms that struck the state in recent years, leading to extensive inundation, electrical failures, and deaths. Even though those events began to alleviate the drought, they fell short of ending it.

Until late December, areas like northeastern California were still classified as abnormally dry. Heavy rains at the start of the new year finally erased those final dry conditions.

The Vital Sierra Snow Remains a Concern

But, authorities caution that drought-free conditions is not the same as being out of the woods. Current readings of the mountain snow accumulation indicate it is approximately 70 percent of the average for this date.

This frozen reservoir, which provides a significant portion of the state's water as it runs off, is a key piece for long-term water security. Water officials stress that it is premature to determine the outlook for the months ahead.

“What we are observing right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” commented a state water resources manager. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to pick up by 1 April so that we’re nearer to normal.”

Even as the official status shows a clean slate, the next challenge is to preserving this hard-won hydrological health during the rest of the year.
