The Fianna Fáil nominee Jim Gavin has announced his withdrawal from the race for Ireland's head of state right away.

He was set to be a candidate among three standing for the Irish presidency, beside Independent candidate Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys.

However, Sunday night he stated in a statement that he "committed an error inconsistent with his values and his personal standards."

"Considering all these factors, I have decided to withdraw from the presidential election contest immediately and return to the arms of my family," he declared in a statement.

Additional details to come.
