Exposing Venezuelan Celebration Footage and AI Images of Nicolás Maduro.
Computer-created pictures purporting to portray Venezuela's president under arrest following his apprehension by the United States have amassed countless of impressions on social media.
How AI Images of Maduro Surfaced Rapidly
The first inauthentic AI image apparently showing him taken off a plane circulated shortly after. The picture was absent from any authoritative US channels; it was instead uploaded on the platform X by an account describing itself as an “AI video art enthusiast”.
We’ve checked the SynthID tool, determining the picture was produced or modified with Google AI.
More AI-generated images were disseminated in the subsequent period, appearing to show more angles of the leader detained. Visible logos on these pictures indicate they came from an Instagram account called ultravfx.
The detection tool indicates all of these images were similarly produced using generative models.
Real Photo Released but Fakes Continued
The former US president posted the first real photo of Maduro handcuffed aboard the US Navy ship on that morning. Yet following this confirmation was published, synthetic pictures continued to spread but were updated to include the gray sweatsuit worn by Maduro.
Reverse image searches reveal the new fake images were first posted on the video platform by a digital art profile. Again, analysis found these subsequent pictures were created or altered AI tools.
