Doris Secures Spot in Ireland Selection But McCarthy Omitted
Returning manager the Ireland coach has named skipper Doris in his Irish team for the fall internationals, but Joe McCarthy misses out.
The captain, who has not played since having shoulder surgery in early May, has come back to provincial training, with doubts lingering whether he will be ready to face New Zealand in the US on November 1.
Second row McCarthy, however, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot injury he sustained during the opening British and Irish Lions Test against the Wallabies in July.
Ulster player Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province winger Calvin Nash are also absent due to fitness concerns, while number 15 Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing hip surgery following the Lions tour.
Dublin province prop Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole new player in the 34-man group, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says uncapped provincial pair Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped Connacht winger Bolton will travel to the US as "backup".
Following facing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their previous meeting, Ireland will play Japan, Australia and world title holders South Africa in the Irish capital.
"It's an exciting group to the squad and there's an opportunity for the veteran players and for the newcomers on the recent tour to Georgia and Portugal," commented the coach, who returns to national team duties after a break to lead the Lions tour to Australia.
In a mostly experienced squad, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will once again vie for the starting fly-half position. The fly-half role is still available, as the two players set to face off for the first time in Saturday's URC match at Croke Park.
Ciaran Frawley is the third fly-half chosen with Farrell opting against calling up the province's Byrne.
At scrum-half, Farrell has picked British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Casey, who led the national side to the summer international wins over the Lelos and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a return for the western province's Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Murphy.
Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey represent an experienced group of midfield choices. Jamie Osborne is another option in the centres, but the youngster is also a leading candidate to cover for the full-back at number 15.
Wingers Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are included. The winger impressed on his national team debut during the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over the Lelos and Portugal.
McCarthy is the only fresh addition in the Irish forwards. The front rower has started two of his province's URC league matches so far and featured in Ireland A's defeat by England in Bristol earlier this year.
The 22-year-old was selected in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer selection, but did not earn a cap.
Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who received his first two caps in those Tests, is retained, and experienced Ulster lock Henderson is back after missing the summer tour.
Conan, who started all three Lions matches over the summer, is set to cover for Doris should the skipper fails to recover fitness soon enough to play the All Blacks.
The national team will assemble in Dublin on the start of the week before traveling to the US on the following day.
