Debated United States-funded Gaza Humanitarian Foundation Concludes Humanitarian Work

The controversial, American and Israeli-supported Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) announces it is terminating its humanitarian work in the affected area, following nearly half a year.

The foundation had earlier paused its three food distribution sites in Gaza subsequent to the halt in hostilities between Palestinian factions and Israel took effect six weeks ago.

The GHF aimed to avoid UN systems as the primary provider of aid to Gaza's population.

United Nations organizations and other humanitarian groups refused to co-operate with its methodology, claiming it was improper and dangerous.

Numerous Gazans were fatally wounded while attempting to obtain sustenance amid chaotic scenes near the organization's distribution points, mainly through Israeli military action, based on UN documentation.

Israel said its soldiers fired alerting fire.

Program Termination

The GHF said on recently that it was winding down operations now because of the "successful completion of its humanitarian effort", with a total of three million packages containing the amounting to in excess of 187 million sustenance units delivered to Palestinians.

The foundation's chief officer, Jon Acree, also said the US-led Civil-Military Coordination Centre (CMCC) - which has been established to help execute US President Donald Trump's Gaza peace plan - would be "taking over and developing the model GHF piloted".

"GHF's model, in which Palestinian factions were unable to divert and benefit from humanitarian assistance, was significantly influential in bringing Palestinian factions to negotiations and establishing a truce."

Comments and Positions

The Palestinian faction - which refutes aid diversion claims - welcomed the closure of the GHF, based on information.

An official from stated the organization should be made responsible for the harm it caused to Palestinians.

"We urge all international human rights organisations to ensure that it does not escape accountability after leading to casualties and wounds of numerous Palestinians and concealing the nutritional restriction approach implemented by the Israeli authorities."

Operational Background

The foundation started work in Gaza on 26 May, a short period subsequent to Israel had partially eased a comprehensive closure on humanitarian and trade shipments to Gaza that lasted 11 weeks and led to substantial deficiencies of essential supplies.

After 90 days, a famine was declared in Gaza City.

The GHF's food distribution sites in various parts of the Palestinian territory were managed by United States-based protection companies and positioned in Israeli military zones.

Humanitarian Concerns

United Nations agencies and their collaborators said the approach contravened the basic relief guidelines of neutrality, impartiality and independence, and that channelling desperate people into armed forces regions was inherently unsafe.

International human rights monitoring body stated it documented the killing of at least 859 Palestinians seeking food in the area surrounding organization centers between 26 May and 31 July.

A further 514 persons were lost their lives close to the paths taken by United Nations and additional relief shipments, it further stated.

The greater part of these people were fatally wounded by the Israeli forces, as per the organization's documentation.

Divergent Narratives

Israeli defense forces stated its forces had discharged cautionary rounds at persons who advanced toward them in a "intimidating" manner.

The GHF said there were no shootings at the relief locations and claimed the international organization of using "inaccurate and deceptive" data from Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry.

Subsequent Developments

The foundation's prospects had been uncertain since militant groups and the Israeli government approved a ceasefire deal to implement the initial stage of the United States' reconciliation proposal.

It said relief provision would take place "free from intervention from the both sides through the United Nations and its agencies, and the Red Crescent, in addition to other international institutions not associated in any manner" with militant groups and the Israeli government.

United Nations representative Stephane Dujarric stated recently that the organization's termination would have "no influence" on its activities "because we never worked with them".

He also said that while more aid was getting into Gaza since the ceasefire took effect on October 10th, it was "insufficient to meet all the needs" of the 2.1 million population.
