Cavers Brought to Safety After 30-Hour Rescue Operation During British Tempest

Swelling floodwaters were a major concern

Three explorers were successfully rescued following a underground operation continuing for 30 hours throughout "appalling conditions" during the severe weather system.

The experienced cavers found themselves stuck inside the demanding Dowber Gill Passage, close to North Yorkshire.

The alarm was raised at 22:00 BST that evening as their expected return didn't happen with a relative contacted emergency services.

Over 100 volunteers from various rescue teams took part

Volunteer groups confirmed more than 100 responders were involved during the challenging mission, that encountered difficulties due to storm impacts, flooding, rough terrain plus extended periods underground.

At the moment rescuers located the cavers during the night of Friday, rising water levels signified the easiest exit route became blocked, forcing everyone involved to retrace their steps.

Operation commander explained the way if they had reached the explorers a bit earlier, everyone might have made it safely by morning.

"Regrettably the storm took an unexpected turn for us," he stated.

"The primary risk is the water and, potentially in specific areas underground, submersion.

"If waters had increased at those points, it would have been extremely hazardous."

Adjacent caving teams joined the effort, including several specialist response teams.

Cave rescue personnel rotated continuously to lead the fatigued spelunkers back, while external personnel endured "appalling" weather to ensure coordination while also manage logistics.

During the operation, volunteers constructed a dam using protective covering to channel increasing waters past the access point.

The first missing caver emerged safely in the afternoon Friday afternoon, followed by another in the early morning Saturday morning with the final member subsequently.

Each explorer sustained injuries but operational commander said they were exhausted after being exposed and damp for 42 hours.

"Needs resilient individuals to endure such conditions," he said.

Emergency responders wrapped up the mission around 7:45 AM.

Even though severe weather had been forecast to impact starting Friday, rescue officials explained the exploration organized by the explorers had been "entirely appropriate" given their skill level along with meteorological situation that day.

Nevertheless, torrential downpours begun prematurely and more intensely than predicted.

The explorers provided key details about their planned path – starting at one location to Dow Cave – prior to departure, while officials stated that information "proved crucial".

"Absent that alert from the relative, awareness would have been delayed these guys were overdue before someone noticed the cars parked near the entrance for a couple of days," he concluded.
